I always buy  my cables from a bike shop.  Take the end with the lead head
and tell the the guy at the shop you want a brake cable with an end as
close to this as he's got.  Get a handful of ferrules (my bike shop usually
just gives them to me) to crimp on the end of the cut cable to keep it from
fraying.  I give myself a good amount of extra cable so a can cut it a few
times right at the ferrule before I need a new cable.
