If there was such a car, it wasn't competitive. It definitely didn't run
during the '72 & '73 seasons when we were running in the Can-Am. The only
thing I can think of that's anywhere near that was the Shadow. It was black,
very low, but it had a conventional driver/powertrain configuration. Oh,
yes-- they were always BLACK. Nice guys on the Shadow team; they loaned us a
set of Crane roller rockers when we blew an engine in practice. We finished,
they DNF'd.
There have been many attempts to defy convention but few have had any
success. I saw a photo of an odd car that Roger McClusky (he owned a tire
store in Tucson when I came here in '70) tried to qualify at Indy. It had
two Porsche engines but he said they never could get them synchronized.

During the wonderful big block era of that series someone built a can-am car
that seemed to have been inspired by the twin tank LSR cars - I think the
driver sat between the right wheels and the engine was between the left
wheels
- The area between was flat , maybe 12" high in front and 18" in back - With
the engine inline with the right rear wheel would like to see how the drive
train was done .
