Hi,

For the record I'm having the transmission out of my TD for the FIFTH time
since I purchased the '52 in '98.  I haven't had much luck.  I've had a
cluster gear blow up, a gear get chipped because a replacement box had the
smaller bell housing, UPS lost one, and the last time I lost 1st, 2nd and
reverse 3k after the re-build because the guy that did the work didn't fit
the cotter pin to the nut on the back of the mainshaft and it backed off
causing excessive play.

So I had quite an education going into the latest rebuild.  I found a very,
very reputable re-builder and I literally replaced EVERYTHING except for one
part that was NLA: the 1/2 selector, (Moss #441-370).

Now 300 miles into the re-built box and 2nd is popping out on occasion and
I'm having trouble finding reverse, (not the usual nudge the car forward and
it goes right in deal, but it doesn't want to go in at all).

The particulars leading up to it are these: all new parts, the 1/2 sliding
hub was tight but has settled in nicely.  All new clutch parts and the pedal
is within spec.  I'm running Castrol 80w90 non-synth and I changed it after
running the box initially for a half hour or so and again at 100 miles.  I
planned to change it again at 500 miles, but, well, it's been 300 miles.  I
changed it yesterday after running the car and nothing unusual came out or
is in the bottom of the box.

It happens hot or cold.  You can actually feel 2nd go all the way in
sometimes, but not others, as for reverse like I said sometimes it's just
not there.  It also happens when the car isn't running down to 2nd not going
in all the way and reverse going missing.

So the guy that did the last re-build is going to look at it again and says
he won't charge for any labor, but I'm wondering if anyone on the list has
an idea what could be wrong with the box to cause the behavior I described?
