Those Virginia black snakes will indeed do a number on the "head rice" 
you are experiencing... they love rodentia.
                            (too much time driving a Mazda today ^^^^)

As far as choke cams... the HIFs seem to start pulling the mixture pretty 
soon into the cable travel.  The fast-idle screw should be a significant 
distance ( 1/8"??) from the end of the cam, so it is up on the "flat" part.

Right now I am running without a fast-idle screw on the rear carb.  It 
seems to start very nicely withOUT choking... and I am getting tan 
spark plugs.

Could be my conversion from ABD to AAF needles (or the other way 
around... from 73 era to late 60s era).

I love those SUs... once I quit messing with the Spitfire HS2s, they 
started working beautifully.

Oil consumption still nil on the rebuild!
