If it is the same plastic float used in spits, I've seen the same problem.
I fixed the float by heating the plastic around the hole with a
soldering iron, and pushing it together until it sealed. Be careful (if
you do it this way) that you don't just melt the surrounding plastic, and
end up with a HUGE hole.
If you don't have access to a soldering iron, then snother idea would be
some kind of sealer/gasket material, but I personally wouldn't trust
them to stand up to fuel indefinately.
