You'll get a couple of responses suggesting that doing ANYTHING to your
brakes without buying new parts will involve death and mayhem. That's fine
for the idle rich, but most of us try and make do if possible.
I've had a fair amount of success using very fine grit sand paper or
similarly fine abrasives to remove minor surface rust from hydraulic parts.
I'd try the brasso. If that doesn't work, try a 600 grit sand paper. If the
piston is pitted, replace it. If the caliper is lightly pitted, you may be
OK. Note that if the rubber seal resides in the piston rather than the
housing, the above advice is reversed.
You can also buy brake caliper hones that fit on a normal hand drill for
about $10 at your local Pep Boys or Autozone.
The caliper pistons are available from most of the major suppliers, and
specialty suppliers will provide stainless steel pistons if you supply the $.
