This is a distinct possibility.  On the MGB GT V8s they will almost
invevtably jump out of reverse gear when everything is cold due entirely to
the stiff gaiter fighting the torque movement of the engine.  It is less
true on the 1800cc but I have known it to occur, especially in cold weather.
Just remove the screws holding the gaiter in place and drive it to see if
there is any difference.  When replacing the screws make sure that the short
one is in the front hole.
