closing the hood

Since there has been some discussion about hood frames I thought this an
appropriate question. On a 57 MGA the hood is fastened to the windscreen by
a peg on either side, these go through the wooden part on the front of the
hood and are secured by a wing nut. The problem being now that winter is
approaching (for us way down south) and the thing doesn't seal well. One
side is tight while the other is loose as there is some play on the notch
on the peg. I have tried to put some rubber weather trim to fill this gap
but this was not very successful. The latter MGAs 1600 I think had a clamp
in the middle of the top of the windscreen could this be retro fitted to
mine, how is it attached or are there any better methods?
Second question, I tried out the sidescreens, is there supposed to be a gap
about a finger wide between them and the windscreen?
Third question, how on earth are you supposed to close the door with hood
up and sidescreens on? It is a tight fit and since the sidescreens fit
under the hood this is impossible to fit/fiddle if you are inside the car.

All advice will be appreciated.
