Years ago, I replaced my handles with these aftermarket chrome handles
that were very strong, but they were held on by set screws that never
held them on. Plus they were kind of ugly.
So when I decided to remove the chrome strips along the tops of the
doors in anticipation of painting, and found that I had to dismantle the
entire door mechanism in order to do so, I thoroughly cleaned, lubricated,
and aligned the window mechanism. The windows now open and close easier
than they ever have. Ditto for the door opening mechanism.
In celebration, I purchased original plastic window cranks and door
handles, and they show no signs of getting overstressed.
I found that the original lubricant for the window springs had turned
to a sticky mess. Generous applications of WD-40 cleaned it up, then
working some CASTROL wheel-bearing grease into it ensured continued
ease of use. I used the same process for all the pivot points and the
glides.
