Will -

Any old ammeter will do.  Ammeters, since they measure current through
themselves, not voltage to earth, are of necessity insulated from their
cases and therefore from earth (ground).  They may be marked + and - on
the case, but when installed, if you know the system is charging and the
meter indicates a discharge, just swap the leads.  

BTW, spent a nice evening recently in the company of the High Priestess
in San Diego.  Lovely evening drive around San Diego in a blue '67B.
