Check the rubber pads that go between the crossmember and the frame rails.
These had deteriorated over time and when one fell out it caused not only a
clunck but but a steerign effect. I kept thinking it must be something with
the brakes but it turned out that the crossmember was rocking back and
forth. There should be two rubber pads of different design on each of the 4
main big bolts

No, probably not the kingpins. I just replaced those, along with the entire
front end. The clunking didn't start until after the rebuild, actually.
I'm
very confident about that rebuild.
The clunking isn't constant. It occurs only for one 'clunk' when I push on
the brake pedal. I can sort of feel it in the steering wheel, a little. New
MC, new lines, new calipers, new rotors. Clunk may not even be the right
word ... a sort of muted 'thok' might be closer. I feel it more than I hear
it ... in my right foot, most of all.
