I'll back Michael up on this one; 'unlawful carnal knowledge' was the
old English euphamism for rape when rape meant simply 'violation'. As
far as I know, at one time in England criminals weren't buried with good
Christians; they were interred somewhat mass-grave style in potters'
fields (this is also often where the poor ended up) and generally didn't
have headstones or much in the way of markers. From what I understand,
their crimes were usually inscribed somewhere on their coffins or on a
board that went into the ground with them, at least. 'For Murder' or
'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge', and sometimes just the initials.
Go figure.
