Lee,

Whatever you do leave the nut on a few threads while you are battling with
getting it loose.  The medical records are full of people who have worn a
face full of steering wheel when it suddenly came loose.

The problem with using a puller is that the feet of the puller usually
scratch/damage the area they are in contact with.
