The procedure to change a TD/TF's crown wheel and pinion for an MGA's
ditto is complicated, involving accurate measurements of the pinion
pre-loading and the positioning of the crown wheel. Carl Cederstrand's
excellent treatise on this matter is of great use, but does anyone "out
there" know how to accurately RE-position an MGA crown wheel and pinion
into a TD axle after someone has already done it, and it is
unsatisfactorily noisy? Is it possible to do this job, not knowing what
the sizes of the original shims or spacer were, and without the use of a
dummy pinion as suggested in the maintenance manual? I do not think
Carl's essay covers this difficulty.
There are several causes for whining noises emenating from a
differential unit. One of them is worn/pitted gears. Another is
incorrect meshing due to poor original setup. And yet another is
possibly due to breakdown of the ball races owing, again, to incorrect
pre loading or shimming of the crown wheel bearings.

All suggestions gratefully received.
