Friends:

Well, I've spent a day under the bonnet of the B, and here's what I've
found ...

1) Bosch coil. Bad idea. Replaced it.

2) Silly bodge on the dizzy side of the coil connexion. Soldered on
a much better connexion. Should work a lot better.

3) Three (count em!) three splices in the wire for the electric
choke. Ouch. Cleaned them up, soldered the splices, and retaped
them. Crossed my fingers. Wire sitting on (!) the headers. Made
a nice thingy to keep it from doing that again.

4) Tightened the fan belt just a tad. Wasn't much I could do without
a lever, but the fanbelt itself looks otherwise ok.

5) Alternator putting out a steady 15V.

6) Really, really ugly meltdown on the high-tension wire between
the coil and the distributor cap. Despite all the other work on
the car, this must be the original 1972 cap and wires. I'll work
on a bodge replacement tomorrow morning and order a real one.

And that about covers it. Thanks for all the input, and now, here's
another question ...

On the alternator side of the coil, there's a connexion for a little
blue plastic thingamajig that is grounded to the inside of the wing
and wired separately to the coil. Small (1.5") blue canister-like
thing, no obvious inscription on it. What is this?

Oh, and another question ...

Should the fusebox have some sort of cover on it?
Is there supposed to be an open spade on the front (forward) fuse,
second from the top? (okay, that's two questions. Sueme.)

And a final two questions ...

Where is the ground strap supposed to be again? I can't seem to find
anything like what is being described.
And ... what is an induction heater? Do I have one? What does it
do? (Please don't tell me it's a fancy word for the car's heater.)

Thanks again!
