Lawrie:

It makes absolutley no difference from a performance standpoint which way the
coil is mounted - upside down, horizontal, or otherwise. The only reason for
mounting a coil in any given configuration is either convenience or personal
preference.

There was a long thread on the functioning of the ignition system, including
coils, over on the Triumph list. Bob Sykes and I co-authered a brief primer
