Midget Brakes and Moss anti-squeel shims

On Sunday, after going to Carlisle on Sat, I was rebuilding the front
calipers on the Midget. Something quite unususal appeared out of the
pistons. They are not even on the side where the piston pushes on the
shims. The 78 MG Workshop manual, which I got from John Twist on Sat,
says the chamfered side goes up. The Haynes manual says the were up in
the early modes and down in the later ones. The old, rusted shims are
solid, while the new ones from Moss have two holes, a large one and a
small one. So:
1) Which way do I set the pistons?
2) Which hole do I put where on the shims?
3) Does it really flippin' matter?

PS the faces that went with the names were not exactly like I had in my
head prior to Sat. It was great to meet all of the ones that I did. And
also to find out that short wives go with LBC's and they are all
particular about fractions.
