That is, the disc is still whole but the lining is no longer flat and
smooth nor connected!!

Congratulations. Larry Dickstein gets the cigar. Two thirds of the
lining on the pressure plate side of the clutch disk had broken loose in
pieces as big as the spacing between the rivets. A piece or two had been
wedged between the remaining good lining and the pressure plate. The
pressure plate was closing more at one side than the other, so the
release plate that the release bearing presses against was sitting
crooked making the release bearing rattle. No damage to the pressure
plate, so the repair required only a new clutch disk and release bearing
(and labor of course).

Funny how this works. The last clutch disk went 3 years and nearly
50,000 miles, maybe 50 autocross dates, and still looked good, except the
rivets were a little loose. This new disk from the same manufacturer
lasted 4 weeks and most of 3 autocross dates, rivets were not loose
except where the lining was missing. Go figure. I think the rivets are
the weak link. So now would anyone like to recommend a heavy duty clutch
disk that might take a little more punishment?
