IMHO 3m make the best aerosol - but get the heavy duty one, not the "trim
adhesive" which is not robust enough

Yes - it has to be or the new adhesive wont adhere! - you can use  a
solvent but frankly youre better off with sandpaper or a wire brush -
abrades the surface for the adhesive too
