Bobby,
I have the same situation, except after idling for a few seconds,
the light is usually on full bright. I accelerateaway from the stop
sign or traffic light, and when the rpms get to about 1700, the light
promptly winks out. I have had no starting/discharging problems.
The owner's manual for my '72 says that the light should be off at
all driving conditions ABOVE NORMAL IDLE. (emphasis mine). Seems to
me there's no real problem with the light flickering on at idle.
Just as long as it doesn't do it at normal cruising speed.
