  I can vouch for this. On a similar note, when doing bodywork,
I always take it to bare metal with machine, then do the
rest by hand, like shaping the bondo and so on.

  It seems like it takes longer, but I do it in so many less
iterations because it's hard to screw up in a hurry by
hand compared to with the power sander.

  With a porting job, you can't add some more filler and
do it again. Be really careful.
