Reminds me of the time I drove my 71 VW Beetle for about 12 miles with a
snapped throttle cable and a buddy riding on the back bumper running the
throttle while I ran everything else from the cockpit. As I recall we
cruised at about 40 mph for a few miles...

Still catching up with the digests but couldn't resist responding to
this, as old as it is.

I used to have a Lambretta scooter and the up-change inner from the
handle bar twist-grip gear change broke. I routed the inner from under
the engine cover and tied it round my right ankle, so down
changes were performed with the left hand and upchanges with the right
foot.

As I was riding along I kept repeating the mantra "Don't put your right
foor down, don't put ...".

After one or other of the cables broke for the third time I replaced
both with clutch cables and had no more problems.
