I have also had a problem with my Z-S carb. I just bought a 79 Midget
with Z-S Carb. Since I have had the car it has seemed to be running
rich. The first few times that I ran the engine quite a bit of black
sooty smoke came from the tail pipe. The car had been sitting unused
for the better part of a year.

Last Friday I was returning home from a trip of about 60 miles each
way(longest so far), when, I came to my exit I lifted my foot from the
gas pedal and the car stalled. I popped the clutch, the Midget fired
back up, but, would only keep running with the accelerator depressed to
keep the engine at 2-3000 rpm. This happened only about a half mile
from home so I nursed it back. When I parked it finally died. I was
unable to restart it. Once I looked under the hood the only thing I
noticed was that there was no gas in the filter. I replaced the fuel
pump. No luck. It sputter a little but wouldn't keep going.

Next, with the air filter off, I lifted the piston and propped it up
with a length of hose. She fired right up, ran very rough and had a lot
of black smoke in the exhaust. I have replaced the diaphragm and have
tried adjusting the needle. No change. The engine will only fire up
when I force the piston open.

I am new to list and MGs and have enjoyed driving the Midget for the
last few weeks. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
