Good tricks to note the position of the nut (so as to not upset the alignment) 
includes white out or tape or both.  You should make sure that it is well 
marked as alignment can be a pain in the butt albeit unnecessary if marked 
correctly.

Actually, there's no need to separate the ball joints (tie rod ends) from
the steering arms. If you simply undo the lock nut, you can unscrew the
tie rod from the tie rod end, then proceed with the rack boot
replacement. Remember to loosen the small boot clamp before trying to
unscrew the rod, and note the position of the locknut so that you can
reassemble without upsetting the alignment.
