Here is Ray's death notice.  Unfortunately there is little information as to
what happened beyond my previous post  which was that Ray essentially died on
the table while undergoing exploratory surgery for cancer...although that is
streching the facts as I understand them.  Ray lives on in his web pages:

Even his voice mail at the University still has his own message on
it....immortality in electronic medium!

His humor will not be soon forgotten.  We will miss you Ray.........TA Terry

South Burlington, Vt-Dr. Walter "Ray" Gibbons, 58, of Mt. View Blvd, died in
the Fletcher Allen Health Care on Sat. July 19, 1997.

He was born in Ironton, Mo. on Oct. 10, 1938, the son of Walter Lee and
Dorothy (McNabb) Gibbons.

Surviving are his son, James Gibbons of Hinesburg; his daughter, Elizabeth
Gibbons of Underhill; the Children's dear Mother, Jane Gibbons of South
Burlington; his dear friend, Shirley Bolkum of Colchester; and his mother,
Dorothy Gibbons of St. Louis, Mo.  Also surviving are two brother and their
spouses, Ed and Dini of St. Louis and David and Peggy of San Antonio, Texas.
 He was predeceased by his father in 1983.

During his 26 years at the College of Medicine, Dr. Gibbons was actively
engaged in teaching and mentoring undergraduate, graduate, medical, and
post-graduate students.  HIs research focused on the fundamental mechanisms
governing the electrical properties of the heart and was published in
numerous international scientific journals.  The high quality of his research
oas recognized by the American Hearth Association with their Louis N. Katz
Basic Science Research Prize and by research grants from the National
Institutes of Health.  Dr. Gibbons served on numerous national scientific
advisory committees and was Associate Editor of the prestigious American
Journal of Physiology.

Ray was a member in good standing of the British Motor Car Club, the Alpine
Tigers East, and the Austin Healy Club of America. Personal interest included
the restoration of British automobiles and craftsmanship in wood working.  He
enjoyed traveling the Vermont countryside and loved sharing its beauty with
his friends and relatives.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 1997 at Ready funeral
Home, South Chapel, Burial will follw the service.  In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Vt. Affiliate,
Box 485, williston, Vt. 05495.
