Since there was a starter that you could still recognise, the pinion was
not in engagement with the ring gear for long. Had it been hung up on the
ring gear--ouch, those RPMs. Let's assume the starter turns the engine
about 500 rpm, then the starter would have turned something like 8 times
the usual speed. Do we hear copper windings rending themselves?
The starter was probably whirling as fast as it could spin itself, but
it wasn't working hard so wasn't doing itself much harm. Still, one
wonders what wear to the pinion and ring gear took place....
