  Slither under the car and stick a safety pin through the insulation of
the skinny little wire that goes to the solenoid. Clip the ol voltmeter
to that for one lead, and the other lead to the OD or transmission. 
Voltage might be a bit low because of the unorthodox  connections, but
you're looking for a "yes/no" answer here, rather than "how much."

 Yes, once it's out, clip a lead to the solenoid, or just hold it in
place with the other end clipped to the OD or transmission.  Watch the
pin move in and out as you connect and disconnect.

Even if it turns out to be the pump, pump replacement isn't as hard as
you might think. The manual shows some sort of wire retainer hooked over
something that you can't see, but you don't use this if the OD is in the
car, you just shove the pump in.
