  The block comes apart in more pieces than you are used to. Instead
of a block that you bolt a sump and a head to and drive away, there
is a block that contains the liners, a crankcase that contains
the crankshaft, and they are bolted together.

  Putting a spacer in there makes the block seem taller in the
same way as adding a spacer between the head and block on a
conventional engine. With the benefit that the spacer is
in a non-critical area now so no gasket problems ensue.
