Howdy Henry - 

The affliction you wrote about is pretty common on Bs' built in '75 and
after.  Believe it or not the problem is usually related to the handbrake
diode that is located behind the glove compartment.  Replacing the diode
should remedy the situation.
Other symptoms of a bad handbrake diode; starter runs on after the engine
has started and/or the engine may start spontaneously without any input
from the ignition switch. 

The diode will run you $15.00  - 20.00 bucks depending upon the parts
supplier you choose and will require about 10 min. to install.
