Paul....and yet, during the four years (1964 to '68) that I lived in
Singapore, probably 70 percent of the taxis in use were diesel-engined
Austin and Morris "Farina" saloons! Considering the traffic congestion and
the abusive nature of driving habits over there (a set of tires used to
last me about 4,500 miles on my Triumph Herald 12/50), those Farina cars
held up remarkably well. For the record, the other 30 percent of the taxis
were Mercedes diesels which surprised me as, in those days, Mercedes were
considered one of the more elite luxury cars.
