I've driven back and forth between Memphis, TN and Atlanta, GA at least 5 times
now. About 400 miles. I believe and the worst I've had is points going out on
me. Now that I've replaced that sloppy distributor, I've had no problems. if
your car can make it 50 miles, it will likely make it much further with no
problems. I am driving back to Memphis tomorrow, and I'll let you guys know
how I faired. IF you have intermittent problems with your MG then I would not
advise doing this trip. I have great confidence in my car now that I've
straightened out all the carb, ignition, and fuel related problems. And since
I did all the work on my car and learned it inside out, I know that I can
likely fix it, were it to break down.
If I were you, also, I would put a basic parts kit together, comprised of basic
hand tools: open ended wrenches, screwdriver set, pliers, spare cables(bicycle
cables are compact and work as a throttle cable in a pinch), test light, spare
fuses.
Parts: points and condenser, spark plug or two(with gapper)
While my parts list is slim, I have confidence all my other components on the
car now work well. I've rebuilt the fuel pump, so it's not likely to fail.
Just make sure you have a car in good mechanical condition and you should have
no problems.
