Yes, the ratio is the number of ring gear teeth divided by the number of
pinion teeth.
For example - the ring gear has 43 teeth and the pinion gear has 11
teeth
Then, 43 divided by 11 (43/11) equals 3.9090909, or as is generally
written, 3.90:1
For what it's worth, many older car manuals refered to the rear axle
ratio as a ratio of ring gear to pinion gear without any division. The
std MGB axle would have been called a 43 to 11 rear end.
