Thanks to the list for responses about my neighbor and the gas fumes.
There were lots of good suggestions and one that I think may be truest of
all is the rusted gas tank (or the expansion tank in the trunk). I say
this because I really get a good whiff when I open the trunk to take out a
tool I keep there. I originally thought gas tank but all the parts I can
see look good. Now I hear the top rusts badly and that fits perfectly with
my problem.

Will also be doing the following with or without pro help (it is going to
the shop this Saturday to have a once over):

check for expansion tank in trunk
check all gaskets at carbs (most already ordered)
check fuel evap lines
check fuel lines
check carbs for further leaks
check gaskets at fuel sending unit

I really got to believe that I have problems at one or more of these areas
as it can be quite strong, especially after coming home from a spin. And
it's definitely gas, not exhaust fumes.

I'll post to the list when I have found the culprit.

Thanks again,
Philip
