The depth of engagement of the pinion with the rack is set with shims on the 
rack, but if the play is here then altering the shims will likely tighten up 
the steering off centre.  I did see a 'recommendation' to turn the steering 
half a turn, adjust the wheel and both track rod ends and use that as the new 
'centre' but can't endorse it.  It is more likely that any play is in the 
steering column UJ just the engine side of the bulkhead, this is repairable on 
chrome bumper cars (the whole UJ has to be replaced on rubber bumpers) with a 
kit similar to a propshaft UJ kit (but smaller).
