My $.02 (Can) worth.  Is this not somewhat similar to the "global warming"
argument?  Given that the human race has had functional thermometers for
only 150 years or so, how are we to know if this phenomenon is not in
fact a part of a larger warming and cooling cycle?  I think that most
people who get caught up in the short term frenzy, self serving or
otherwise, fail to look at all the data.  As important as any recent
trend is the knowledge that measurement ability of mankind in many areas is
only relatively recent in our history.  Some cautious thought is required
here, I believe.
