fuel guage

An irritating occurrence today - whilst driving the GT the furl guage
suddenly fell from half full to zero...... i.e.it conked out...... before
i start going through every wire in the car to find the problem, has
anyone an idea of what the most likely culprits are? - i checked the
wires on the sender visually and theyre connected, didnt have time to
clean them this evening - where are the other problem points??
