QUESTION: Could the centrifical. adv. springs be
so worn out that I'm getting too much advance at
idle, and not enough at high revs?

Hey! A really good question. Seriously. If nothing has ever been done to that
distributor in the way of a rebuild, the answer is quite probably yes. Now if
you set your timing via the static method, as opposed to using a timing light,
you will have an advance curve that is "early", but the total advance will be
correct. Try this and see if it makes a performance difference.
