You might want to spray the rusty area with PB Blaster and brush off the
rust.  I only say this becuase of recent discussions here concerning WD-40
wich is really just a lubricant (it was actually developed to dispace water
from electrical parts) while a product like PB Blaster will actually brake
the rusty parts aprt so you can claen them!

Glad you found the problem and had a realitively easy fix.  I had to rebuild
the calipers when mine wouldn't release!  Not a bad job but still a bit of
work!
