Heater Fitting

Can anyone give advice about re-fitting the heater box ( I have upgraded
to more efficient fan and matrix) on my c/b MGB GT 1973.  If I fit the
vent cable and try to replace with the bottom rubber in place it does
not seem to want to fit easily - and consistently twists the vent
control cable.

Any experience - tips welcome
