First, I'm back to the list after about 2 weeks. I wasn't going to be
near a computer, and I didn't want to sift through two thousand messages
when I got back. I'm sure I missed the best discussion yet, though, and if
I did, someone fill me in. I'm also using my family's account since I
won't be back at school until later in the month (no classes at MIT in
January :) ).

Enough about me. My project for the next few days will be an overhaul
of
my 18GB engine (from my '72B, yes I know it's not original). As you may
remember, I developed a nasty sounding noise after it locked up on my
ill-fated Thanksgiving trip. I haven't investigated much, since I left the
car at home when I returned for the last few weeks of class and finals.
Now that I have some time, I figure I'd get her running again.

I've decided, mostly for the educational potential, to pull the engine
and
do a complete overhaul. I've got the Haynes and Bently manuals, and
together with this list, I'm pretty confident. Tomorrow, I'm going to rent
a hoist, and maybe a dismantling stand and go to work. I've already pulled
a bunch of pieces out: radiator and surround, oil cooler, distributer,
starter, carbs, etc. I've disconnected about everything I should have to.
The bell housing bolts (the tranny's staying in) and removing the hood
(sorry, bonnet) are about all that's left.

I've kept all the posts over the last few months relating to this
process,
but does anyone have any specific advice for me? I plan on using a chain
wrapped around the studs the valve cover anchors to, with some big washers
and nuts on top, then hook that to the hoist. That is the method of choice
isn't it? Anything else I need to worry about?

        TIA

  -Matt Gaetke

p.s. I know some of you would tell me to leave the engine in the car until
I know for sure what's wrong with it, but I've never pulled an engine
before, and I need something to do over the next few weeks between football
games, right?

p.p.s. GO VIKINGS!!!!
