In fact, Bud, I disagree with both Haynes and Bentley - but that's an OF's
privilege, I guess! Unless you really want to swap the springs as well, try
this.............
Disconnect the driveshaft, the flexible brake hose, the handbrake cable, the
sway bar ('77 and later) where it attaches to the axle and the U bolts.
Remove that part of the exhaust system which passes under the axle. Support
the axle on three jack stands - the third one under the nose of the diff.
Undo the rear spring shackles and lower the rear of the springs to the
ground. Place a floor jack under the diff, remove the jack stands and
withdraw the axle.
If you want to transfer brakes and halfshafts, you don't even need to drop
the springs. Just remove the drums and backing plates, then two stron people
can lift the axle across the car over the springs.
