On the last panels I made up, I used a stiff black waterproof fiberboard
that I bought from an auto upholstery shop, along with some thin foam
padding. Don't know what the trade name for the stuff is. It worked well
because it was thin (the Masonite I could get was 1/8", too thick to use
on doors), waterproof, and could be cut with repeated passes of a utility
knife. I glued and stapled the vinyl to the panel. Because it was thin, I
used the shortest staples I could get for the gun, and bent over the ends
with a hammer on the backside. Looked great. I wouldn't use untempered
masonite, even if I could find thin sheets, as it isn't waterproof and
tends to warp and mildew over time.
On my current car I decided to buy a panel set--couldn't talk my wife, a
theater costumer in a former life, into making up the vinyl panels. I
bought the Moss ones, and note that they are mounted to a very thin luan
mahogony ply. Should be fine.
