Two quick and dirty methods for o/d ID. First, look at the engine #. Example
18v672Z is non-overdrive for 1973, while 18v673Z is for overdrive. Second,
the overdirve circuit is controlled by a yellow wire, the only yellow wire on
the car. Look for a cluster of wires on the passenger side fender well, just
above the starter, and about 10" aft of the fuse box. The overdrive wire is
in this cluster and has a connector in it. This is where the overdrive
harness going to the transmission plugs in. If you see the yellow wire
hanging, with no harness connecting, there is no overdrive. Obivously, if
the wire does connect to the harness going to the transmission, the overdrive
should be there, but there are no guarantees. The only sure fire method is
to look under the car. Over the years, a lot of engines have been changed
and a lot of gearboxes have been removed. Good luck!
