I'm not sure what to tell you, as my chrome bumper 'B used a different
wiring plug than your '80. I will give you some cheap advice - go to an
auto parts store and buy two things: A haynes MGB manual. If they
don't have it in stock (and they won't) they should order it for you.
Second, buy a good multimeter that you can keep in the car. I know you
have a craftsman, but I don't know if you want to keep in in your glove
box. Either way, spend the extra $8 so you'll have something to use if
your car ever develops electrical problems on the road.
Well, I *thought* I had my haynes manual with me, but as I recall, I
left it in the boot of my 'B. I would have suggested doing some wiring
checks with your good VOM. Check one wire coming from the alternator
plug, and see where it goes to. IOW, hook a ground from one lead of the
alt. plug and hook your VOM to one of the suspected ends...Which *could*
be the + on the battery, the idiot light in the dash, and one other spot
I can't remember. Set your VOM to check continuity, and ground the
other lead. If you have continuity, voila! You at least know where
this wire goes. Maybe one of the other MG guru's would be willing to
check the wiring plug on their alternator to tell you which color wire
should be where...After all, the wiring from your alternator should
connect to the stock wiring at some point, and the colors should match
the diagram in the Haynes.
As for finding a big enough spade terminal, you might be better off to
look at your alt. and see what type of plug it uses - make a diagram for
yourself, and find a junked 'B with the same wiring. Snag the plug and
solder it into place. If the wiring colors from the plug match the
originals on your car, one problem is solved without any messy testing.
Finally, I'm not going to tell you what to write or how to write it,
but you'll find that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
