Go with hanging or with a remote filter (I mount mine toward the radiator on
the A - if you think changing the filter all the time on a B sucks, try it on
a Twincam with Webers over the filter - aarrgh!
The damage done by the standing type occurs when you fire it up and the
engine runs without oil to the bearings for a few seconds. You can soften
this effect, when you have to, as on the MGC, by keeping the revs down when
it fires, or ideally by installing a separate ignition circuit switch that
allows you to crank without spark until you see pressure.
This sort of effect is even more pronounced in modern engines with management
systems that send the rpm up over 2000 the second the thing fires (lots of 4
cylinder Fiero engines bit the dust, no loss, IMO, due to the specification,
by a designer that should have been shot, of a standing fit filter without an
anti-draindown valve).
