Ok, we have some confusion here.
James, your idea is sound for the earlier cars that have a top fill
point. Later Cars like Bud's do not have a dipstick in the top of the
transmission. Just a fill plug on the side. Some form of pump makes it
much easier (possible) to fill the trans on the late cars. Personally I use
a gear oil pump that fits on top of a bottle, available at most parts stores
and fill up the container with appropriate oil.
Every now and then there will be confusion as our cars have a number
of not too well documented change points.
