I concur with the other advice about stands under the front spring hangers.
However I had to change my pump by the roadside a couple of years ago and
managed it with all four wheels on the car and on the ground - no jack or
stands because of soft ground. Because of the slope of the ground the right
rear corner was also the lowest point of the car, but even with 3/4 tank of
petrol I had no leakage apart from an initial dribble when first
disconnecting the pipes. By contrast, when I replaced the flexible pipe on
the pump, in the garage, with the back of the car on stands as recommended
and only about 1/4 tank, petrol p****d out all the time. Not that I let it,
of course, I had to use various plugs, but still got armfulls of petrol in
the process.
