My steering wheel won't come off!

I've been trying to remove my steering wheel (1980 MGB) using the standard 
"loosen the nut and hit the post while pulling on the wheel" method without 
any luck.  I read a letter in the Nov/Dec issue of the AMGBA Octagon that 
says to first turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.  Any idea 
why?  Also, any other suggestions to remove the wheel?  I bought an even 
bigger hammer, but that didn't do it.  Thanks.
