Paint can openers work well for this task, having a small flat hook on the
working end.  You might like to grind the thin hook just a little thinner,
and maybe down to a sharp edge to facilitate the insertion between the
headlight trim ring and the body.  The MGs are supposed to have a rubber
gasket behind the headlight bucket and trim ring (some may be missing), and
the thickness of this rubber flange is generally sufficient to allow use of
the thin hook to remove the ring without damaging the paint.  You do
however have to PULL very hard at the bottom of the ring and not lever the
part off.
