I did the same thing... but I used a big american car
emergency brake release handle. (peddle engage / hand release)

I don't know if this has been said before but I hit on this idea as I was 
fine-tuning the fit of the bonnet and constantly going back and forth to pop 
it...

I fixed one end of a short (18") piece of wire to the bonnet release 
mechanism and pushed the other end through the LH wireway behind the 
headlight where I made a finger-pull loop in it. It just dangles there until 
needed. Just reach into the wheel well and give it a tug !
